Sustainable Design Project
Using “Okala Ecodesign Strategy” to redesign sustainable product. I chose airport (indoor public) resting chair as the object to redesign.


OKALA GUIDE
Ecological design takes a holistic view of products and services, attending to the complete range of environmental impacts over the full cycle, from material extraction to end-of-life. Systemic tools such as the Ecodesign Strategy Wheel and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) help designers see the wider view and manage a depth of information to steer their work towards more ecologically responsible designs and ways of living.

According to IDSA, the Okala Guide was summarized into seven steps:

From the seating illustration above, the degrees and dimensions of resting chair (reclining chair ) back pad, seat pad and leg pad can be used in design.
SKETCHES

The first concept is trying to make the base structures as simple as possible. All the parts are standard and easily manufactured structures. The three individual cushions are replaceable, easy to change and clean.

The second concept focus on simplifying the base structures. Just use one piece on one side to support the chair. Also, it has got the function of handle. The cushion can be one foldable part, easy to change and distribute.

The last concept focus on adding additional function to the chair, sleeping and waiting. The chair can be rotated and served for different purpose. The chair can not only provide two functions from one product, but also make it much more flexible to airport areas planning.

FINAL SOLUTION


Parts can be overlaid to each other, which can possiblly increase the distribution efficience.
